Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School

Coming in Fall 2026...

Architectural Cutaway of the remodeled third floor Middle School

Today, we are thrilled to share an exciting chapter in Villa Duchesne’s story—a strategic investment that will shape the future of our School and inspire confidence and growth in our young women.

Dr. Dawn Nichols, Head of School

An Exceptional, Catholic All-Girls Middle School Experience

Just over a year ago, we celebrated our ISACS accreditation, a testament to our collective commitment to excellence and our Sacred Heart mission. Alongside the many commendations about our impressive School, our accrediting body also highlighted an opportunity: to envision a clearer, multi-divisional future at Villa. This called our team to reflect upon and evaluate our structure and the needs of our students and families, with a particular focus on our thriving Middle School program. We asked ourselves: how can we build upon the success of our all-girls seventh and eighth grades and create an even more transformative Middle School experience?

The answer is an intentional, research-driven investment in Villa's all-girls Middle School program, a comprehensive investment designed to benefit our students immediately, add value to our families, and strengthen our community. We are creating:

  • A Distinct Middle School Division for grades 6, 7, and 8  with a dedicated Middle School Principal;
  • An Innovative Academic Program designed to foster confidence, independence, and intellectual curiosity in adolescent girls;
  • A Beautiful, Purpose-Driven Physical Space tailored to support the developmental stage of Villa’s Middle School students.

Limitless Potential

The middle school years are pivotal—a time of incredible brain development and limitless potential. We envision a space where our students can thrive, supported by our exceptional educators, with a curriculum that challenges them to grow and build sound habits of intellectual formation, animated by a student life experience rooted in sisterhood and community.

Every experience at Villa prepares our students for the next one. An investment in our all-girls Middle School program is also an investment in the stability and academic excellence of our High School.

Mrs. Alice Dickherber, Assistant Head of School for Strategic Initiatives

Guided by Our Sacred Heart Mission

This initiative aligns perfectly with the Goals and Criteria, particularly Goal 2, which calls for Schools of the Sacred Heart to implement a dynamic curriculum that reflects effective instructional methodology, current educational research, and ongoing evaluation and to utilize space and the physical environment in alignment with best pedagogical practices. We are also guided by our Strategic Plan, which identified the need for more distinction within our Middle School division, and what we learned during our ISACS accreditation process.

Responsive to the Educational Landscape

This strategic shift is also motivated by the evolving landscape of independent secondary education in St. Louis. With Saint Louis Priory School and De Smet Jesuit introducing sixth-grade entry points for boys next year and the popularity of Chaminade College Prep's sixth-grade entry point, we know that our boys will be leaving Villa after fifth grade. We see these market changes as an opportunity for us to re-envision our sixth grade and create an unparalleled, all-girls middle school experience for sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Our Lower School team, led by Lower School Principal Mrs. Christine Phillips, will continue to provide exceptional support for our boys as they navigate the secondary school application process during their fifth-grade year.

Creating a Beautiful, Purpose-Driven Physical Space

After the close of the school year, we will begin transforming the second floor of the 1929 Building into a state-of-the-art middle school home. This renovation of academic space represents the largest investment in our academic program in recent years—a testament to our belief in the power of a dedicated middle school program and the potential of our bright and capable students.
Middle School gathering area with grouped seating for conversation, tables for homework, and a think tank.

The Forum creates a communal neighborhood feel that will allow for class meetings, informal gatherings, advisory sessions, and group activities.

Middle School Classroom with wood-topped tables, high top chairs, smartboard, and monitor.

Classrooms are clean and bright with a cheery and calming color palette, new technology, and flexible seating.

Middle School Corridor with traditional granite floor and wooden arched passageways.

The long corridors have been broken up with locker bays and benches for smaller gatherings and archways that add character and warmth.

Room with carpeted risers and pillows designed for informal speaker presentations.

The Speaker’s Circle creates an intentional space for our girls to practice public speaking, guest speakers, and community time.

Middle School Commons Corridor with traditional granite flooring and wooden arches

The Forum and Speaker’s Circle will open up long corridors in the center of the 1929 Building and create a large, open, and well-lit space.

Middle School Faculty Office with desks, desk chairs, and conferencing table.

Faculty offices are collaborative and intentionally cross-curricular to foster greater collegiality and inter-disciplinary discussion.

The Middle School will occupy the most intriguing space for any young girl who drives down the front lane - the top of the towers.

The middle school will occupy entirely existing spaces and square footage and will reimagine the function, use, and layout of the second floor with best practices in student pedagogy at the forefront of the design process.

Our desire is to create a space that can only be described as Historically Modern—capturing the warmth, tradition, and architectural intrigue that are so beloved by our community, in a contemporary and compelling way that feels relevant and acknowledges visually that Villa is rooted in tradition but always advancing towards new horizons. Dr. dominic A. Key, Director of Operations

Looking Ahead

In the coming months, we will share more details, including:

  • The Middle School’s new leadership model;
  • Signature programmatic elements;
  • Construction timeline and details.
We will continue confidently in the direction of this collaborative vision, drawing on our strengths and addressing areas of challenge. As with all strategic initiatives, this will require the investment and support of our community. Your support allows us to continue to give our students the best possible educational experience. As our plans continue to crystalize, we will bring our community along every step of the way.
