Contemporary History I

Understanding history is integral to understanding our world today; however, recent history is frequently overlooked or glossed over in traditional history courses. America’s sports triumphs, from our Olympic hockey victory over the Soviets to the rise of the most dominant national soccer team in all history: the women’s national team, is also an important part of the American story. Similarly, the events of 9/11 have directly impacted the way that we travel the world, how many in the world view America, and how Americans view the world today. This course covers the major national and international events that have shaped our world from 1979 to the present day.

Students completing this course will have a free period during the first semester of sophomore, junior, or senior year and return to complete the second half of the course in the spring semester.

Modern History

Modern History students will investigate significant events, individuals, developments, and processes from 1500 to the present. Students develop and use the same skills, practices, and methods employed by historians: analyzing primary and secondary sources; developing historical arguments; making historical connections; and utilizing reasoning about comparison, causation, and continuity and change over time. Students will also continue to develop skills in using appropriate research tools and effective argument-driven writing, as well as using critical reading strategies.

Students completing this course will have a free period during the first semester of freshman year and return to complete the second half of the course in the spring semester. Freshmen can take only one summer course for credit.

Salvation History

Salvation History introduces students to the person of Jesus Christ and God's saving actions as revealed through Sacred Scripture. Students learn how to approach the Bible intellectually and prayerfully by practicing the skills of biblical interpretation and imaginative contemplation. The course emphasizes key religious truths found in the Hebrew Scriptures and empowers students to read the Bible with spiritual maturity and apply its message to their lives today. At the conclusion of the course, students will have acquired essential knowledge and tools to understand God and God's Revelation through the lens of the Catholic, Sacred Heart tradition.

Students completing this course will have a free period during the first semester of freshman year and return to study the gospels in the spring semester. Freshmen can take only one summer course for credit.

Women in the Church

Women in the Church explores how female disciples have participated in the Church’s mission over the past two millennia. Students will learn about essential concepts in Ecclesiology and key moments in Church History by reflecting on the diverse stories of holy women who have helped the Church more faithfully fulfill Christ's Great Commission and build the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in Heaven. Students will be challenged to consider how they are called to bring themselves, their stories, and their gifts to the Church today and in the future.

Students completing this course will have a free period during the first semester of sophomore year and return to complete the second half of the course in the spring semester. Sophomores can take two summer courses for credit.

We accept MasterCard, Visa, American Express, or Discover. Grade level indicates the grade student will enter in fall 2024. Registration is not complete until payment has been made in full.

Refunds, minus a 10 percent administrative fee, are available up to two week's prior to the session's start date.
